ATS (Applicant Tracking System)
Software that filters resumes before a human sees them.
Definition
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software that companies use to receive, organize, and filter job applications. The major ATS systems in 2026 are Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, Taleo, BambooHR, and SmartRecruiters. When you submit a resume through a company career page or LinkedIn Easy Apply, it goes into one of these systems first — not directly to a recruiter.
Example
You apply to a Senior Data Analyst role at a Canadian fintech via their career page. Your resume goes into their Workday instance. Workday parses the PDF, extracts skills, education, and experience, and scores your resume against the JD's required keywords. If your score is below the threshold the recruiter set (typically 65%), your resume is auto-rejected — the recruiter never sees it.
Why it matters
~75% of resumes are filtered out by ATS before a human review. Two failure modes dominate: (1) keyword mismatch — your resume uses different vocabulary than the JD, so the parser doesn't match; (2) format issues — multi-column layouts, graphic icons, or text in Word headers that the parser strips. Both are fixable.
