Resume tailoring
Rewriting your resume to match a specific job description.
Definition
Resume tailoring is the practice of rewriting (or restructuring) your resume to match a specific job description. Three moves: (1) match vocabulary — use the JD's exact terms; (2) reorder by emphasis — your top bullets answer the JD's top responsibilities; (3) strengthen with specifics — replace generic phrasing with metrics + tools + scope.
Example
JD opens with: "Build and maintain ETL pipelines for marketing attribution data." Generic resume bullet: "Worked on data engineering projects." Tailored: "Built ETL pipelines in Python (pandas, SQL) processing 2M+ rows daily for marketing attribution." Same project, JD-specific framing.
Why it matters
Generic resumes get a ~1.5% callback rate. Tailored ones get ~10%. The math is brutal — but so is the time cost (30+ minutes per JD manually). Most people skip tailoring and send 200 generic applications. The candidates who tailor 30 instead get more callbacks with less work.
