Recruiter outreach

A direct LinkedIn message to the hiring manager paired with your application.

Definition

Recruiter outreach (or hiring-manager outreach) is the practice of sending a direct LinkedIn message to the hiring manager — paired with the formal application — to make sure your name gets recognized when the recruiter reviews the pile. The single highest-leverage move in modern job search.

Example

You apply to a Senior Data Analyst role at a Canadian fintech via the company's career page. The same day, you find the team's manager on LinkedIn and send a 100-word message: short, specific to one JD requirement, references one specific company event, asks for nothing. The recruiter forwards your resume to the hiring manager who already recognizes your name.

Why it matters

A same-day outreach raises callback rate 4–5x vs the application alone. Recruiters at most companies get 200–500 applications per role. Without outreach, you're indistinguishable from the rest. The catch: writing a personalized message for every application takes time — most people skip it. The ones who don't skip win.
